| Nice - Promenade de Anglese |
In the end of the XIXth century Nice became more Russian city then French and English. There are several Russian orthodox churches in Nice. The russian Nikolskaya church was constructed in the beginning of the XXth century. At this time the amount of Russian exceeded the amount of Englishmen. One of the most numerous Russian colonies has been long since concentrated there. Near to the church there is a small chapel constructed in honour of tsarevitch Nikolay - the son of Aleksandr II who died in Nice in the age of 21 years.
The Nikolay Chudotvoretz church was built in 1860. The grand duke Konstantin Nikolaevich participated in a bookmark of a temple. Herzen is buried on a cemetery near to the church. Russian tourists usually necessarily visit the Mark Shagal's museum. |
| | Despite of appeal of all the Nice's sights, I, guilty, have exchanged them on the whole day aimless being on a beach! I have judged so: people usually go to Nice basically to have a rest - to bathe in the sea and to sunbathe on the sun. All the rest is though also important, but minor addition to the main advantages of this resort. As I was limited in time I should devote myself to the main thing, and in the evening if I should be in time I go sightseeing. |
| | When began to darken, people moved from beaches to cafe and restaurants. This pleasure was not on a pocket for me that year. Therefore, having suppressed in myself the desire to join people in cafes, I continued detour of internal quarters of the city. Thank God, I was not involved with shops. I went on a beach again.
It was already dark, I was expiated for the last time, sat on a chaise lounge, and observed of an evening surf for a long time... The melancholic mood was supported by the quiet music sounded from restaurants. The sea rustled with a pebble and personified something eternal, unlike the temporary human world, for an instant adjoined with this eternity so that during a next instant completely to disappear. Only two elements - the sea and mountains make upon me such deep impression. It was possible to be given to the slow philosophical reflections completely there on the evening beach of Nice. |

I did not know that there were so many Russians in the 19th. There was an agreement between Napoleon III and Victor Emmanuel II but the people voted almost unanimously (83%) for Nice becoming part of France. | LoriPori Mon Dec 24, 2007 12:19 UTC Had the pleasure of visiting Nice many years ago.
