On the way to SV BSZ-2004 in Karlsruhe

It is considered, that the territory on which modern Strasbourg (in French without "g" on the end and with an accent on last syllable: Strasbour) was manned owing to the favourable geographical position, already in the Bronze age. Up to Christmas Romans won local settlement Argentoratum, and transformed it in the strengthened outpost of empire intended for protection against tribes of germen.
With falling of the Roman empire there has come decline of the city while at the Frank's kings Karoling it was not built up again. Gradually the city got all greater value, and by XII century the enterprising population of dealers and handicraftsmen was generated here.

The territory of the city constantly grew, reflecting its economic rise. In the second half of XIV century through Rhine the big bridge was induced. It allowed Strasbourg to take the important place on trading ways of Northern Europe . In XVI century the city continued to prosper, and entered Protestant movement, becoming one of its centers. In Strasbourg, willingly given a political asylum, many Protestant thinkers and figures, and also the Italian, Swiss and French refugees lodged. It was promoted blossoming of a cultural life of the city .
By the end of the XVI century political strike between various local fractions and wars in Northern Europe led to decline of Strasbourg. In 1697 the weakened city was annexed by the French kingdom: it lost the independence, however, inclusion during the French political and economic life revived former well-being of the townspeople.

Rough events XVIII and XIX centuries - the French revolution, rise and falling of Napoleon, the Restoration, the Second empire of Napoleon III - should be reflected in destiny of city. In 1870, after six-week artillery bombardments, that seriasly damaged the city and its historical monuments, Strasbourg was attached to German empire with the status of capital of Alsace-Lorraine. Only in 1918, after capitulation of Germany, the city was returned to France. The second world war brought new sufferings: the city was occupied by the nazis, and in the end of war it was undergone to bombardment by aircraft of allies. This tragical mistake brought to ruin many peace inhabitants and to strong destruction of old city.
During the post-war period Strasbourg got the all-European value, but absolutely otherwise. The city was selected by headquarters of the European Council. The European Parliament - advisory body of the countries of the Common Market sits here.

We just came back from from some time in Alsace, but didn't have time enough for Strasbourg. So your page served as a very good substitute, but made me want to go back there.

Only drove past the city. Was my first time driving wrong side of the road, so did not want the challenge of city traffic. ;-)

This is indeed a lovely city, certainly worth visiting one day. I esp. liked the Cathedral, the Cammerzel House & the timbered houses.

I've never been to Strasbourg, or the Alsace region either, for that matter. Looks like a nice city with wonderful architecture.
