  • Favorite Thing: Top priority was given to copying the palace and gardens of Versailles as an epitome of monarchic splendour, in the construction of the dream worlds of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Making plans for this project commenced in 1868.
Ludwig II purchased the Chiemsee island of Herrenworth in 1873 as construction site.

Within 5 years architect George Dollman presented thirteen projects. In 1873 Ludwig made a decision on the basis of the last project to begin construction of a palace on lake Chiemsee.
Ludwig II Bavarian built his biggest castle - Schloss Herrenchiemsee on the island. It is almost a copy of Versailles. The king - romantic conceived to make it as his show-window of royal power and riches.

The construction began in 1878. 4 thousand persons took part in the construction. Huge financial assets have been spent. But by the moment of mysterious death of the king in 1886 the construction has not come to an end.

  • Favorite Thing: According to the project Ludwig's palace should be larger in sizes than the palace in Versailles. However the French palace was not copied completely. Thus the palace from the very beginning was reflected as a unit.

The facade of the palace in sizes is larger than the facade of the palace in Versailles. The mirror gallery also surpasses in sizes the French prototype. The world famous Ladder of Envoys in Versailles was destroyed in 1752. It was recreated in Ludwig's palace on ancient engravings and established symmetrically between the right and the left wings of the building.

In 1876 Court Garden Director Carl von Effner completed the plans for a large garden resembling that of Versailles. When the king died, only the sections along the main axis with their famous fountains and waterworks had been completed.

It is amazing how much Herrenchiemsee Palace duplicates Versailles! Though, it seems that they had easier access to water. Poor Asslan that did not visit the castle...
