From the middle ages Bremen become the large center of sea trade. "Buten und binnen, wagen und winnen" - "outside and inside to risk and win" is the slogan of Bremen.

The risk, the initiative and enterprise - at home and far from it - all these promoted blossoming. In the ninth century city was often named Northern Rome.

In 1358 the city has joined Hansa - to trading and political association of northen cities. During the highest blossoming in the sixteenth century it accepted protestantism.

In the seventeenth century it became the stronghold of Reformation, being declined more to a Calvinism, than a Lutheranism. In 1646 the city received the rights of free imperial city.

Right after it the destiny of archiepiscopate Bremen began to vary promptly.

After Thirty-year war it departed to Sweden, in 1715 - to Hanover, in 1810-1815 it was in France.

Only after defeat of Napoleon Bremen was again declared as a free city.

After association of Germany in 1871 it was included in the structure of the German empire with the status of free city.
