The Dominican Republic has four major areas. Starting in the North is Peurto Plata on the Atlantic side. This area is known for it's sport minded individuals who enjoy sailing, surfing & hiking as the terrain is rugged and the waters are rough. Punta Cana, still on the Atlantic side has calmer waters than it's predecessor with miles of beautiful beach's & swaying palm trees. Punta Cana is a popular destination spot with activities such as snorkeling, swimming and scuba diving, not to mention the land tours you can take. La Roma on the Carribean side has much more to offer the snorkeler or scuba diver with its abundance of colorful fish, calm waters and carribean flair. It does have some beach's but just not as beautiful or bountiful as Punta Cana. Then you have the town of Santa Domingo, further east on the carribean side. No beach's or water activities, but lots of history and old city charm. The Domincan Republic has always been a popular european destination, but is gaining popularity with the american's due to being so cost effective on the budget. With it being mainly owned, operated & traveled by europeans, you'll get a taste of a totally different culture and topless sunbathing is not illegal here. Before you know it....you women will be wanting to run around with you tops off before leaving this wonderful land of versitatlity. |
