A little city in the countryside

by Tartu2005 - last update: Apr 17, 2006

Voru, don't let it be just a drive by

Võrukeel, a recognised language in Estonia and working on being an offical language recognised by the EU, is spoken in Võrumaa and some other parts of south Estonia. It's speakers number about 70,000. Like north Estonian, it's an Uralic language and is related to Setu dialects that are spoken across the unofficial county of Setumaa, that stretches from south Estonia across to Russia. There are Setus living in the Russian side that speak Võrukeel, and the people of either side are connected by the same culture and tradtions but at the same time have separated in their beliefs - in Estonia the Setus adopted Lutherism and the Russian Orthodoxy.
Although it sounds relatively similar to Estonian to an outsider, television programmes that are in Võrukeel warrant subtitles. For example, in Estonian 'koer' (dog) is 'peni' in Võrukeel.

Voru has a surprising number of decent cafes and eateries. There's also a few nice shops selling handicrafts and Setu souvenirs. Voru is the capital of Setumaa but the best Setu museum is in Varska, a further 30 mins south, close to the Russian border. For comparisons of the Estonian ('North Estonian') and Võrukeel languages

Võru is also the former home of Estonian hero and poet Kreutzwald. A Baltic German, Kreutwald loved his Estonia and his famed epic 'Kalevipoeg' was translated into many languages in Soviet times. His house where he practiced as a doctor is now a museum dedicated to his works.

Festival scene

The city with a lake, parks, trees and cafes

Võru is ideally a summer destination, as it boasts a wonderful beach, a huge lake that is very clean with an activity area for kids, a volleyball area, a small bar and a beautiful vista of tall trees surrounding the lake. One of the Võru's major attraction in summer is the Võru folk festival in July, as mentioned below.
In winter, in the surrounding countryside, in Rõuge especially, you can find beautiful woodland trails to go hiking or cross country skiing.

Seat of Setu culture

Every year, Võru hosts a national folk festival that draws people from all round Estonia, and even from neighboring countries. Traditional dance, costumes and handicrafts are celebrated over the weekend. There is also guest performers and a focus on a guest cuisine, sometimes from as far away as the Med or the Balkans. The official site can tell you more about the festival, which this year is being held between the 13th and 16th of July.

Nice page. If the Setu dialect gets recognition as an Official Language I think Vorarlberg in Austria should make swerious attempts to get such a recognition, too, It is subtitled in Austrian TV,,,,
