Farewell Gibraltar | view of Ceuta, Spain & Morocco's mountains |
It has always been my dream to see Africa. However, I had never thought of Morocco. I had always envisioned touring Egypt, Tanzania, Kenya, and South Africa. While I still have that dream, this trip brought me a bit closer and was a great surprise. Here are some of my memories, reflections, and passages from my journal.
The infamous Rock of Gibraltar quickly faded into the horizon as our tour bus started winding its way out of the tiny port of Ceuta, Spain and into Morocco. The breathtaking scenery went on for miles and miles and offered an odd contrast to the city-like poverty we saw along the road. The were many buildings in ruins and standing right beside them were grazing goats and cows. I had never seen anything like it in my life, but I loved it. Here's an excerpt from my journal:
"We drove along bumpy roads, waving back to tons of little kids as we passed. Soon, we were in the Atlas Mountains and I found myself yurning to be hiking and camping. We passed many Berber people that mad me think of Druids with their brown smocks and pointed hoods. There were farm animals everywhere along the road--even in the city. And, many people rode what Mohammed [our tour guide] called "land cruisers with four-legged drive"--donkeys. " |
