Nowy Targ (The New Market Town) is said to be the capital of the Podhale Region - the historic, administrative and economic centre of theregion. It has a history of more than 650 years. The town was founded by Polish King Casimir The Great in 1346. Highlanders (Gorale) say that Nowy Targ is 'the City'. Local self-government does its best to make Nowy Targ a 'friendly town'. And this seems to work as more and more tourists and investors come here.

From several centuries every Thursday in this town famous fairs have taken place. The coat-of-arms of the town imagines the figure of St.Catherina, who is the patroness of local church. Nowy Targ numbers about 33.000 citizens.
The town is situated in the confluence of the rivers Bia³y and Czarny Dunajec (White and Black Dunajec), beneath the Gorce Mountains.
