Ujazdowski castle - Warsaw
Ujazdowski castle Ujazdowski Castle Review

A big, recently reconstructed early baroque castle, in an interesting area of Warsaw´s parks and city monuments.

In 1624 The King of Poland Sigmund III Vasa, built the castle as it looks today, with the intention of using it as his summer residence. The Ujazdowski castle was burnt by the Swedish army in 1655. The powerful Lubomirski family, which took over the castle afterwards, hired the architect Tylman van Gammeren to rebuild it. He gave the castle the baroque style it has today. During the World War I, the Ujazdowski castle together with surrounding it buildings served as a military hospital. German army burnt the castle in 1944, during the WWII. The outside walls, which were still standing after the war, were demolished in 1953, to give place for never built Polish People’s Army Culture Centre. The Ujazdowski Castle has been completely reconstructed and rebuilt in 1988.

Warsaw Rising Museum - Warsaw
Warsaw Rising Museum Monument to the Ghetto Uprising Review

Everyone agrees that history should never be forgotten. Warsaw uprising is a part not only a history of the city but also a history of Poland and Europe. This is a great museum and should not be missed when visitng Warsaw. Even if you are not interested in history!

The fundamental goal of the Museum is to conduct research and teaching activities directly related to the Warsaw 1944 Rising and to the legacy of the Polish Underground State. The Museum strives to achieve this goal mainly by accumulating, developing and preserving collections as well as by disseminating and popularizing knowledge on these subjects. Some of the other activities carried out by the Museum aim to integrate veterans’ and military circles and educate youth in the spirit of patriotism and respect for national traditions.

Old Powazki - Warsaw
Old Powazki Powazki Cemetery Review

In the area of Powazki there is Powazki Cemetery, (Cmentarz Powazkowski) called often Old Powazki (Stare Powazki) - the oldest catholic cemetery in the city. It is often compared with the famous Père Lachaise in Paris, for its beauty and atmosphere.

The Powazki is actually a necropolis, consisting of a whole complex of cemeteries. In 1790, most cemeteries in the Warsaw city centre were closed due to sanitary reasons, and a new Catholic cemetery in the western suburb of Powazki was created. Soon afterwards, several other cemeteries were founded in the area: Jewish, Calvinist, Lutheran, Caucassian and Tatar. The Orthodox cemetery is located not far from the Powazki necropoly.

Royal Way - Warsaw
Royal Way Royal Way Review

It's one of the busiest commercial streets of the city, with countless shops, galleries, bookshops and cafes. While Krakowskie Przedmiescie is lined with the 18th century huge aristocratic residences, this street is dominated by the 19th century neo-classical houses and palaces.

The southern part of the Royal Way, behind Aleje Jerozolimskie, dates back to the 20th century. A little further east towards the Vistula you will see the imposing building of the National Museum; the highlight of its collection are the impressive frescoes from an early Christian cathedral in Pharos, Sudan, discovered by a Polish archaeological team. Next door in the same building is the Polish Army Museum.
