Guanajuato, we discovered by looking in our Lonely Planet travel survival kit, when sitting in our hotel room back in Mexico city. It sounded ideal, and some of the images they included made it seem like the perfect spot. Small, quiet, and after a massive city like Mexico, that's exactly where I wanted to head. So, after a few minutes of happily nodding, we made up our minds, and we were very happy we did. It's a little north of Mexico city in the state of Guanajuato, it's a former silver mining town, and the roads to get into it, are built on former river beds, which are now tunnels through the mountains. You'll get a taxi through these, which is very exciting if it's your first time. Like a fun house ride. There are very few of the streets in town where traffic is permitted, so be prepared to get your excersise, because you will be doing plenty of walking and hiking. |

| | Guanajuato sits at an altitude of 2017 metres, you'll feel it believe me, if you are not used to being 'up there', it may take a few days to get so you feel alright. There are plenty of things to see and do here, nice restaurants, and their main zocalo is the main meeting place at all hours, it's a wedged shaped square with very neatly trimmed trees, they refer to as "Piece of Cheese". There are tours that you can take in taxis which will give you incredible views of the city from the upper regions in the hills. |
The people in Mexico are very pleasant, and Guanajuato I found is not much different. Very good restaurants here, this one, El Claustro was one that I would go back to, that's for certain. When you eat at any restaurant, there's only one question you have to ask yourself, would I go back? And if your answer right away is, damn right I would! Then you know it's good. | | | el Claustro Restaurant in Guanajuato |
