*Latest travels to Jurassic Park *

by spitball - last update: Feb 14, 2008

South American Penguins in Honolulu
><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><
I spent two fantastic weeks on the gorgeous island of Kauai ! from November 23rd to December 16th, 2007.

The reason I call these my "latest travels to Jurassic Park", is because all three Jurassic Park films were shot on Kauai, as well as many, many other known and famous films, I've posted a list in my Kauai travelogues, see if you recognize many. Some, you might even be surprised.

For a view of some of my travel photograph's etc.., open the external page to my flickr site above.

Back in (October, 06) I spent 7 days, 6 nights over in Victoria, on Vancouver Island; had a great little holiday, until I came down with a cold, and decided to haul my asspt, back home instead of possibly killing my folks. As my mother is now 87, and my father, 82. I called them when I got back home, and the old man thanked me. He still wants to stick around for awhile. ( Go Figure )
So, I've been updating my tips, and travelogues on my Victoria pages, if your interested.
I've also been keeping myself busy with my photography; ( most of my photo's are using film not digital - I don't always jump on the bandwagon ) I've added a link on my External page here. There you'll see some of my own photo's @
flickr. If you do have a peek, also check out others' images that they have taken. There are a lot of great photographers out there on this ball. It's also a good way of learning a few tips, and possibly improving on your own holiday photo's. It just makes it nicer for your own viewers. No more - "boring, family slide-shows".

The city of Vancouver is located at the south western corner of the province of British Columbia - (B.C.) for short, or as it has become known {Bring Cash} as the cost of living here is quite high compared with the rest of the country. Expect to pay $700 - $800 rent and up for a small one bedroom suite. & that's not including utilities. That's also on the cheap side of the scale. (to give you an idea)

In the past year (on my former pages) I spent alot of my time thinking up tips, remembering past travels (I'll more than likely continue in the same vein) searching for subjects around town to photograph, just so I have something more to add to my pages. It's fun and can be addicting, you become a tourist in your own town, which can be good for a change of perspective now and then. So, give it a try yourself, you might just "discover" something new, something you thought you already knew about your town.
And if you find yourself unable to take a 'real' trip, (not counting any drugs) this is a cheaper way to go about it. Its fun posting your tips, and then seeing what you've posted, up there in brilliant colour on your computer screen. Almost like you have now become a published author. So, have a gas and get writing.
Have fun meeting other members through their pages, or on the Forums. Sometimes (SOMETIMES) a few members will show their churlish sides and like rotting fruit, will make comments that should not be permitted on a fun site such as this one. It just gets others' riled-up, pissed-off, and then it basically throws a sour wrench into the works, and then you've gone and ruined someones good times here. So, let's all just have fun; keep things somewhat light, but remember: this is also an important site, so what you write will be read, by many people the globe over. "Just the facts mamm"

Recently I purchased a brand-new digital camera, much better than the cheap unit which was my first. Found that at Toys r Us for $81.00 one christmas. Got it for a young nephew, but since it had no viewing screen on the back, the only way you could see how you did was when you got home to your computer. I decided to keep it and try it out. So; long story short; I never did give it to him, which was just as well. His parents gave him a proper digital camera that year.

Personal Photography Experiments

The images here are Polaroid photograph's taken on the original Polaroid SX-70 camera, you can manipulate the image and create something which at times can resemble a painting. But only with the SX-70, you can find these at yard sales, and many times you can get them for next to no money, as most people have no clue what can be done and what the end result will look like.
I found that after you take your shot, place the developing Polaroid under your arm pit [for warmth], or in a warm spot. {not the microwave as I found out, these photo's have a small amount of metal in them and you will get an arc. Check out the next photo} makes for some interesting ah, fun effects tho'.
When the image is developing before your eyes, you use a pointy but smooth impliment to 'move' the lines/ colours around until you get the desired result.
Every now and again, I'll take the SX-70 out and make some photo's I can then manipulate into one thing or the other, it's fun and most of the times can be a wee surprize at what you'll get. Very often, I may take a photo that doesn't really look very interesting at all, but when I work on it, it can completely change in appearance, as an example, take this shot of my poor friend Fiona, I had the brilliant idea of sticking the photo in the microwave oven. {Since when you manipulate, you have to get the photo warm}. Usually, I'll stick it under my arm, and that usually works. I failed at this time to remember that every Polaroid photo has some metal inside.

Microwaves and metal create an arc. Makes for an interesting light-show, and an even more interesting image in the end. Still, I'd stay away from using anything but your regular confection oven
Still, I may just try this out again.

Finn Slough Location

One of my favorite area's around Vancouver. Actually, it's closer to the city of Steveston, is a tiny hamlet (if one can call it that) called: Finn Slough. {check out my page on this place for it's history, it's in the travelogues} When I'm thinking of getting some photograph's, I'll often think of this place first.
Usually you must start manipulating the Polaroid as soon as possible, but I found on certain occassions, that you can actually work it after quite a time has past, it just takes alot of elbow grease, and friction.

Some people will say - "I can do that in photoshop, and get the same result" Well, sure you can, but this is more hands-on for me, and it feels like you've really made a photographic piece of art.
Try fooling around with images of people, which at times can be a little tricky, (don't even think of using the microwave) but all you have to remember is that if you move a line a little too far to the left, right or somewhere else, all you have to do is move it back. One thing though, any black or very dark area's when rubbed will show white through, and you won't be able to fix it anymore. On this portrait of Maya, I tried to stay with the contours of her face and the direction of her hair.

Here is an example of using only a small amount of manipulation, I didn't want to take too much away from my nephews features, but enough that would enhance the image.
