Corregidor: Manila's Little Guardian Rock

by nimato - last update: May 22, 2008

Corregidor is a small tadpole-shaped island strategically located at the mouth of Manila Bay; thus its nickname The Guardian of Manila. It is actually the biggest among five islands scattered in between Bataan and Cavite upon entering Manila Bay. Geographically, Corregidor is much nearer the Bataan peninsula. Politically, however, the territory is under the jurisdiction of the Province of Cavite.

True to its name, the island, for centuries, functioned as a checkpoint for Manila visitors and invaders alike. Also known as 'The Rock', the island fortress now stands as a monument of valor for the Filipino and the American defenders who bravely held their ground against the invading Japanese forces during the onset of the last war.

Corregidor and the Second World War

Corregidor, in World War II, was the bastion of Allied defense in the Asia-Pacific region against Japanese offensives. Shortly after the main Japanese attack on the Philippines December 22, 1941 and after Manila was declared open city on December 25, 1941 (what a Christmas day!), the island became the seat of Pres. Manuel Quezon's commonwealth government. Corregidor's most significant contribution during the war was, perhaps, the slowing down of the Japanese forces towards Australia. Japan predicted to conquer the island in 50 days. Corregidor did not give in easily; the island fell on May 6, 1942, five months after the first Japanese attack on the Philippines was carried out December 8, 1941.

'I'll Return, Again and Again'

Though the general's 'I shall return' statement was one of the strongest words in the 20th century, mine above is more applicable today. Because Corregidor today is not just a great historical marker that you visit only once and that's it but also a place to relax and commune with nature on weekends. A great recharging place for busy Manilans.

Manny, the photos beg for some more info, I guess as a result of WW2 and the bombardment, what was in the tunnels? Are they all wrecked?
