Virac from Atop Mt. Oayon and other Province of Catanduanes, Philippines Off The Beaten Path Tips

With the friendly and very accomodating GreenCats mountaineers (Hi Bryan, Noriel and Junjun) of Virac as hosts and guides, an overnight camp-out on top of Mt Oayon as a side pleasure activity from my work was made possible. The trailhead at the foot of the mountain is about 30 minutes away by jeep from Virac proper. It took us 3 hours in easy fun pace to reach the peak. 360 degrees view on the campsite. Great panoramic view of Virac and its coast. Mayon is visible here on clear skies.

I was able to bring my ever-reliable MountainBike to Catanduanes. But of course, I rode the trails going to the barrios of Virac taking an early break from my field work in the afternoons. That's 4-6 PM trail ride. Greenfields, waterfalls and streams to cross and yes the local everyday scene of people doing their rounds.

When my field work was totally over in 3 days, me and my friend, Kruger rode our bikes to Puraran via Solong Falls from Virac. That took us 4 hours, 40kms travelled and lot of sweat on mostly mountainous gravel road. But the prize of scenic sights along the way - waterfalls and beach coasts - is more than the effort.
