The "Big Thing" | Butanding - a snapshot behind the dorsal fin |
In 2004, Time Magazine chose the "Butanding" (local name for whale shark) Interaction Program in Donsol Bay as the "Best Place For An Animal Encounter" in this planet. The place seems to attract more of these big fishes (the longest I've seen and swam with is about 8m long) cause they find their favorite food, planktons to be a-plenty and better-tasting (maybe) at the mouth of Donsol River and Ugod River. Yes, they are big but very gentle and friendly; and they don't feed on the first thing that comes into your mind.
March to May is the best time for these whale sharks to show up in numbers here.
Donsol, Sorsogon was a once sleepy fishing town not until the Butanding Interaction Activity was conceived. The place could be reached from Manila by plane to Legaspi, Albay in less than an hour , plus the 1 1/2 hour drive down to Donsol. On a low budget? Take a bus that plies Manila-Legaspi - takes about 10 hours at night and longer by 4 hours at daytime. |
