A question for the girls - have you ever met a man who wasn't much to look at, who made no effort with their appearance and was consequently quite shabby, so that you didn't really give them any thought when you first met them. Then as you spend more time in their company you find that they are really quite charming and very witty and you suddenly realise that you are massively attracted to them. This is what Havana was like for me. It is crumbling and quite grubby, but it has a magic about it that would be near impossible to describe in words and it works it's way under your skin and lodges itself in your heart. There has been a lot of money invested in renovating the old part of the city (La Habana Vieja), and this is where the tourist are taken on tours, but we spent most of our time in Central Havana amongst the crumbling buildings and broken pavements and the Habaneros living and getting by in their positive, creative and resillient way. |
