Amsterdam - you won't be disappointed..

by Myfanwe - last update: Mar 8, 2007

Such a chilled out vibrant City...

Amsterdam is a great destination, ideal for a long weekend or longer City break.. there is so much to do and see here, you just might have to go back!!

The City is built around a network of canals which are lined with the distinctive gabled townhouses & houseboats.

The people are extremely friendly, English is widely spoken in all parts of the City.

I have never seen so many Museums in one place as I have seen in Amsterdam, they are not all arty either; for instance the Sex Museum, Marijana museum, Heineken Brewery & Diamond museum. Of course there are the great Art museums in the City too; the Van Gogh museum and the Reijksmuseum. All in all the variety of the many museums in Amsterdam sums up the fact that this is a place like no other.

Shopping is great here too, there are rows and rows of shops for your perusal, there are your run of the mill high street shops, gift shops, open air markets & flower markets the shops seem to go on forever.

Public transport is reliable, punctual and there's plenty of it. The trams in the centre are easy to use - pay the conductor when you get on or buy a strip of tickets. The train service from the Airport is great, the Journey takes approx 20mins, the trains run every 10 mins and will set you back 3.60 Euros.

The Red Light District

On stumbling upon the Red Light District at a first it looks like any other canal side street in Amsterdam... then a simple glance up at a window will tell you otherwise!! It's not for the faint hearted as there are quite a few Sex shops, theatres with live shows & numerous ladies in the windows touting for business. It did mention in my guidebook that not all of the women are erm women, so beware!!!
Beautiful tulips in the flower market

I'm going to pop over here for a couple of days in March - looks like a nice hotel there. How far is it from Central Station? Gillybob greetings

Hiya Vicki! I've stayed at the Art Gallery many times when I've visited Amsterdam... so glad you enjoyed it too - it's a real favourite of mine! You didn't get to try Mohammeds omlette for breakfast then? You will have to go back again!! :))
