Gift shops at Blackpool
All over Blackpool you will find a fantastic array of gift shops selling every kind of gift you could imagine. They are great for finding that special little something to remind you of blackpool - I have a little blackpool tower in my living room which brings back memories of this great little town.
Directions: In and around the Promenade and town centre.
Coral Island has got to be the coolest amusement arcade around. It has an excellent Pirate themed facade on the front and many things to do (and spend money on) inside. There is also a nice looking restaurant and fish and chip shop inside.
Directions: Central Blackpool, on the Promenade.
Bikes for Hire at Blackpool
There is a bike rental system in Blackpool where you can hire a bike from one of the bike stations dotted around the town. The one we saw was on the promenade near the South Pier.
Town Hall, Blackpool
Blackpool Town Hall is a great looking building with many fine architectural features. It is a Grade 2 listed building. It was designed by Potts, Son and Hemmings and was built in 1895-1900. It replaced an earlier building on this site.
Blackpool has a great, wide promenade which is ideal for taking a stroll beside the seaside or a strenuous jog or bike ride.
Directions: Blackpool sea front.
The central pire was built in 1868 to help fulfil the Victorians passion for promenading over the sea. It was known from earlier times as the peoples pier as it offered a variety of entertainment including open air dancing and steamer sailings to Llandudno and the Isle of man. Nowadays the Central pier has a family bar, ferris wheel and amusement arcades to keep you occupied.
Directions: Blackpool promenade - about half way down.
The Blackpool tramway runs from Blackpool to Fleetwood. It is the only surviving first-generation tramway in the United Kingdom. The tramway dates back to 1885 and is one of the oldest electric tramways in the world. The Trams are a great tourist attraction, it is a joy to see them going back and forth along the sea front. From our experience the older more attractive trains are brought out on sunny days when there are likely to be more people around. Our first day in Blackpool was quite overcast when the first tram I saw was like a red shoe box - it had no character at all. Luckily the next days was sunnier so we saw quite a few of the old trams which were oozing which character. The tramway runs for 11 miles and carries 6,500,000 passengers each year. It is also one of only a few operational tramways in the world that operate using double-deck tram systems, others including the Hong Kong Tramways system and Alexandria Tram in Egypt
Directions: Tram stops can be found along the promenade in Blackpool.
Blackpool Tower was one of the things I was most looking forward to on my visit to Blackpool - it is a great landmark and can be seen for miles around. It is a Grade I listed structure whose foundation stone was laid on September 25th 1891 with the Tower being opened to the public on 14th May 1894.
The Tower stands at a mighty 518ft 9 inches tall. Not only can you go up to the top of the Tower in a lift, within the Tower buildings you will find a ballroom, aquarium, restaurant and Jungle jims playground for the children. The admission price incorporates entry to all of the attractions, we didn't go in as we felt that it needed a little more time than we had, to get the most out of the admission price which was in the region of £12-£15.
