The Snow Capped Beacons

The town of Brecon nestles in the shadow of the majestic Brecon Beacons and is surrounded by beautiful scenery. In the centre of town there are a wide range of shops selling a range of local crafts, antiques, books and the finest Welsh food products are available to sample in the many cafes and restaurants in the area.

Brecon is an ideal base for those who enjoy the outdoors, the Taff trail cycling/footpath which is 55 Miles long links Brecon to Cardiff following the valley of the River Taff. There are also many horse riding centres in the area or you can take it easy on a Canal boat on the Brecon & Monmouthshire canal.

The annual International Jazz festival is held in Brecon each year during the month of August the festival attracts Jazz enthusiasts from all over the world

The town is steeped in History, Brecon Castle is situated near the centre of town, the ruins feature the earliest style of Norman architecture, Brecon Cathedral is also close to the centre together with the Brecknock museum and the South Wales Borderers Musuem which pay tribute to the war heroes and explores the military history of the area.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Fresh mountain air, plenty of countryside walks.
  • Cons:The Welsh weather - when it's good it's very very good but when it's bad it's horrid!!

Your page brings back wonderful memories of my stay in Brecon. I had such a good time there! I'm looking forward to meeting you in person at the Speyer tour in summer.

Great tips, Vicky! Never heard of the Visitor Centre! It reminds me of my gruelling bike ride on the Llwybr Taff through Talybont. I had to cycle back from Libanus with a puncture :-(

Great photo of Pen-Y-Fan -- I love this kind of scenery -- was planning to visit the Beacons this year but didn't get round to it in the end -- must try and visit next year -- very nice little page, thanks.
