I visited this Mississippi town in Novemeber of 2005 for just a couple of days. Located in the northeastern portion of the state, Columbus is a cozy southern town with a population of about 25,000, just 5 miles west of the Alabama border. Although relatively small, the town has a long and rich history dating back to 1821 when it was founded as Possum Town, referring to the many furry critters that scurry around these parts. There are several monuments here in honor of Confederate soldiers who died fighting for the south during the American civil war. And unlike many southern towns and cities which suffered great devistation during the war, Columbus was for the most part spared. Due to this fact, many antebellum, or pre-civil war homes are still standing here. Walking around this town, you see some wonderful aged buidings and homes, as well as some great lessons in history.
