Schiphol Airport - Terminal information: Schiphol Airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Airplane
Getting TO/AROUND: Schiphol Airport (AMS) is located about 14km, or 9 miles from the center of Amsterdam. It is one of the busiest airports in Europe, as it is a hub for many major airlines. There are a few options in regards to getting to and from the airport to the city center. Some hotels in and around Amsterdam offer free or cheap buses to and from the airport. Check with your particular hotel to see if they offer this service. Cabs between the two take about 20-25 minutes, but can be a little pricey, around 30-35 Euros. The train, which is the cheapest and in my opinion the best option, runs to and from Centraal Station every 10-25 minutes, and will cost anywhere from 3-6 Euros each way depending on the class. Welcome to Amsterdam! :)

Bicycle / Cycling: Amsterdam - City of the Bicycle!
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Bicycle
Getting TO/AROUND: Once you arrive in Amsterdam and begin mulling around, after seeing all of the people on them, you might think that every bike in the world has somehow made it's way to this city! There are people on bicycles everywhere in this town! And the ones that are not actually in use at a particular moment are parked in huge gaggles around some of the major venues such as Dam Square and Centraal Station. If you are a tourist, it is a great way to get around and see the many sights that Amsterdam has to offer. There are a slew of bicycle rental shops throughout the city, as well as companies that offer group bike tours. But if you do choose to tour Amsterdam by bike, or on foot for that matter, just be careful of some of the local riders. They tend to ride a little aggresively, and getting in their way may cause some shouting or tremendous bell ringing! :)

    Walking: Get off yer horse!
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: Amsterdam is absolutely a city that needs to be explored on foot. Unless you have a medical condition that prevents you from doing a lot of walking, in which case the trams are excellent, hitting the bricks is the way to go. The city center is relatively small, and there are no hills to climb. Do yourself a great service and take it all in as you cruise around town on the best transportation that was given to you, your feet! Just watch out for bicycles with bells-a-ringing flying by!!!

Canal boat: The Canals of Amsterdam
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Ship/Boat
Getting TO/AROUND: The Netherlands and the sea have a long tradition with each other, much of the country itself is land that has been reclaimed from the sea. What better way to experience many of Amsterdam's sights than by boat! The canals that make their way through the city provide and excellent means of transportation not just for getting from point A to point B, but for taking in much of the city's lovely ambiance and rich history. There are many companies that offer tours on the canals, but taking a water taxi can be just as fun, and cheaper as well!

The Marriott looks quite impressive. I didn’t know that they had one in Amsterdam. It looks like you picked a superb place to stay.
