Venice was the last stop on our honeymoon in 2002. It was beautiful. We had been warned that it smelled bad and that it wasn't kept up. That wasn't true. I was impressed by just how clean it was. At the time, many of the canals were empty due to renovation and cleaning.
If you are on a limited budget, two things you shouldn't miss are a gondola ride (overpriced but an integral part of a trip to Venice) and a tour of the doge's palace. We rented the headphones with the walking tour for about 5,50 Euro and the tour took about 2-3 hours. It was fascinating. The artwork inside the doge's palace is unbelievable and the old prison and the torture chamber were very interesting.
I didn't care for the food in Venice as much as I did in Rome, Positano or Florence.
Behind St. Mark's Square, this is the part you see if you pay to tour the Doge's Palace.
Standing in front of the Bridge of Sighs, named because prisoners got their last view of Venice and freedom as they walked through the bridge.
