many will know this village from the song "widecombe fair", well a lot of people certainly do as from april onwards it is packed out with grockles, often on coach trips escaping the horror that is their week stay in torquay, or perhaps more commonly those who think it a good idea to go for a drive through devon's lanes.
what people don't realise is that there is bugger all to see in widecombe, other than a few gift shops and the church there is only a large car park and a pub that is staffed exclusively by romanians and russians-oh yes that great west country welcome! so, if anyone wants to visit the village please do, but be aware that the pub in the village-the old inn-is NOT where any of the locals drink. if you want to go somewhere that is genuinely authentic then go to the rugglestone pub, about 300 yards outside the village towards venton, that is a real english pub with proper character.
saying all this though, the area is particularly beautiful, albeit more beautiful on the 3rd tuesday in april-that is the day that the sun shines in this part of the world. i suggest you get out of your car, yes leave it in the giant car park which is discretely hidden in the centre of the village, and go for a walk, perhaps up towards natsworthy and on to jays grave, or maybe up bonehill. whatever, do try and do something other than just drive around as, even if for no other reason, the lanes are very very narrow and i am fed up with having to reverse for miles because some people are incapable of finding their own reverse gear!
