Fichtekränzi: Dinner With Don

On my final night in Germany, local resident Don met me for dinner. He hadn't been to Sachsenhausen in awhile, so we decided to try this place. It was very lively even at the early hour we visited, so we decided to brave the elements and sit outside. It wasn't very long before we had lots of company. There was a good variety of selections on the menu and prices were fairly reasonable. Service was a bit slow, but I got the sense the management was a bit overwhelmed by the number of guests that evening. Food was tasty.

Favorite Dish: I had some braised beef covered in Frankfurt's signature "green sauce," which was very good. Don went for the Sülze (aspic of pork). While this place specializes in Apfelwein, Don and I decided to go for beer. Don had a pils, while I tried a glass of darker Breitenlesauer Landbier. The malty beverage was very much to my liking.

Zum Gemalten Haus: Lunch With Apfelwein Zum gemalten Haus Review

By no means a secret and recommended in many guidebooks, Zum Gemalten Haus enjoys its place in Frankfurt's historic section of Sachsenhausen. You have the choice of eating on the sidewalk, eating in the outdoor but covered smoking area, or inside. I chose the smoking area because it offered cover from the clouds threatening rain.

The restaurant itself has a decent menu at reasonable prices. The featured beverage is Frankfurt's signature libation of apfelwein, or apple wine. Similar to cider but a bit drier and more refined, the drink should be sipped and not gulped, lest you suffer an unexpected kick when you next stand up.

Favorite Dish: I tried one of the lunch specials, which included a cup of soup and a portion of Presskopf (head cheese) with bratkartoffeln (pan fried potatoes), along with a pint of apfelwein. Very tasty and cheap -- my total bill came to EUR 11 including tip.
