Let's say you're really fond of Bavarian beer. And let's also say your spouse is not at all fond of big cities and likes to be near water. An excellent compromise is to base yourself in Herrsching am Ammersee. It's pleasantly set on a lake (by the shore of, as the name would suggest, the Ammersee), allowing for quiet strolls, relaxing scenery, and the possibility of boat rides. In addition to the above, Herrsching is also right on the S-Bahn, allowing for a quick 40-minute ride into Munich.

There are quite a few walking trails outside of town, affording a number of forest and stream views, along with a few peeks at the Ammersee, and even the Alps if the weather conditions are right. One popular walking destination is a small village about an hour's hike away known as Andechs.

Why is Andechs such a popular walking destination? Well, this village has a monastery atop the hill, which (in addition to the religious services you would expect) brews an absolutely heavenly beer.
