The End of the Valley

Our return to the Appenzell region would not have been complete without a trip to Wasserauen, the end of the rail line. In addition to lovely views from the area itself, there is a trailhead to the Seealpsee, as well as the base station for the cable car to Ebenalp. It also has some nice trails and benches ideal for napping

Hike to Ebenalp

We stayed at the Berggasthaus Seealpsee for 2 nights, allowing us to do some hiking. We hiked from the Seealpsee, up past the famous Berggasthaus Aescher (Rick Steves' favorite place to stay in the area) and on to the Ebenalp. After a warm-up Ovomaltine at the Berggasthaus Ebenalp, we took the gondola down to Wasserauen.

Appenzell Town

When we got to the base station at Wasserauen, we decided to take a trip into Appenzell Town. It was a bit off-season, so the town was rather quiet. We strolled the streets, shopped, and ate lunch before returning to Wasserauen and hiking back to the Berggasthaus. The next morning, we were up early to catch the first Appenzell Bahn on our way to Lugano in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino.

I'm quite sure that I was at the Seealpsee as a kid. Would love to go back there one day.
