Leuchtturm Lindau and other Lindau, Germany Things to Do Tips

The Leuchtturm, or lighthouse, is one of the more noticeable aspects to the harbor. In addition to admiring it from dockside, you can walk out to it and climb the stairs to the top. Prices vary with time of year, day of the week, and weather conditions. Since it was a cloudy weekday, we only paid EUR 1.60. The views were still quite nice. Also take a look at the interesting paintings on the inside walls.

Also accessible by foot is the statue of the Bavarian Lion opposite the lighthouse. It (along with the lighthouse) was constructed when the current harbor was built in 1856. If you don't feel like paying a few Euros and or are too tired to climb to the top of the lighthouse, you can climb on the base of the lion statue and take excellent photos of the lake and the town. Of course there's nothing to stop you from walking to the Lion AND climbing the lighthouse... :-)

This unique structure certainly grabs your eye as you stroll through town. We didn't go inside, but we took a few pictures of the outside. The intricate frescoes on the walls are quite interesting.

A very nice walk is to stroll the perimeter of the island. While not terribly long (maybe 45 minutes if you stop for photos), it is very scenic. If it has rained recently (as it had when we made the walk) some parts of it can be a bit muddy and/or "buggy." Just work your way through those parts quickly and linger in more pleasant places. We especially enjoyed the railroad dam and the flowers near the bridge.

The Pulverturm, or powder house, is located on the western edge of the island. First constructed in 1508, the tower was a originally part of the city's walled fortifications. During the Thirty Years' War, the pointed roof was actually lowered in order to create a smaller target for Swedish cannons. During the early 19th Century, the building was used for gunpowder storage, which is how it received its current name. Nowadays, the building is used for meetings and conferences.

Do you feel lucky? Well, try your luck at Lindau's Spielbank (casino). The modern building on the north side of the island offers high-rollers ample opportunity to part with their money. Be aware this is strictly a Black-Tie affair. I left my tuxedo in my other backpack, so I didn't enter. It was fun to stroll by and imagine what was going on inside, though...
