Things To Do: Hallgrímskirkja
  • Tip Rating:
  • This striking and controversial church, designed by architect Guðjón Samúelsson, is the structure you are most likely to see when you are in the Reykjavík area. Admire the structure from outside, or make your way inside to appreciate what is there. You can also climb the bell tower to get panoramic views of Reykjavík. The church is open daily from 9AM - 8PM.

    Things To Do: Tjörnin
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you have some time to kill on a sunny day, make your way to the Tjörnin, a small lake in central Reykjavík. There are nice walking paths and benches to sit on. From the lake, you can get fine views of Hallgrímskirkja and downtown Reykjavík. A nice place for a scenic picnic as well.

Directions: From the BSI bus station, walk past the Budget rent-a-car and take the pedestrian bridge running parallel to Hringbraut (not the one crossing the street towards the Airport). You will see the lake in front of you.

Things To Do: Bláa Lónið (Blue Lagoon)
  • Tip Rating:
  • When my friends heard I was going to Iceland, they all said, "You GOTTA see the Blue Lagoon!" OK, so we stopped by here on the way to catch our flight home. It was fine, if a bit pricey
(As of July 2008,entry costs Kr 2300, towel rental Kr 450, bath robe rental Kr 900). The water is nice and warm, and the experience is relaxing.

We took advantage of the "Reykjavík Excursions Relaxing Tour to Keflavík." With this tour, you get about 2 1/2 hours at the Blue Lagoon (while you store your luggage on the tour bus) before continuing to Keflavík Airport. Cost of this option is Kr 4400, including entry to the spa.

When you arrive at the spa, you will get a wristband with a magnetic attachment. When you get to the locker room, choose a locker, then when you're ready to lock your compartment, close the door until you hear a click. Then, touch your wristband to the scanner flashing your locker's number to lock the door. When you return, touch the wristband to the scanner again, and the locker opens. You can also use your wristband to buy snacks and drinks in the complex (you pay on departure).

    Things To Do: City Hall
  • Tip Rating:
  • This modern building on the north end of the Tjörnin is the center of city government. It's enjoyable enough to admire the outside, but you can go inside as well if you like. Visiting hours are Monday - Friday 8AM - 7PM, and weekends noon - 6PM. There's even a cafe inside.

Goodness, the Blue Lagoon looks amazing! I'm blown away by the scenic pictures, Mark. Btw, did you by any chance try the fermented delicacies??

The Blue Lagoon attracts my attention. This could be one of the reasons why I am visiting Iceland one of these days. Thanks for sharing.

I love these rainbow photos of the fountain :-)) My god, Iceland is expensive. Haha, I should start saving if I want to go :-) Sheep's head ? No, I think not. I'd rather have the same as Sara - this veggie meal looks very much delicious :-))

Great virtual picture of Iceland. My husband is very interested in going. I must tell him about the sheep's head. Thanks for the Birthday wishes!
