Honningsvåg is the main village on the island of Magerøya, and is the closest community of significance to the North Cape. The pastel colors of the buildings are a by-product of post-World War II reconstruction (the entire village was razed at the end of the Nazi occupation).

As one might expect, Honningsvåg sees a tremendous number of cruise ships of all shapes and sizes, unloading their passengers for the 30 minute bus ride to the North Cape. In addition to cruise ships, the Hurtigruten coastal steamer docks here daily in both directions. If you're on the northward trek to Kirkenes, you can arrange for a 3 hour bus tour to the North Cape and back for about NOK 600.

Almost all visitors to Honningsvåg will make their way to the "top of Europe," be it by bus, taxi, car, bike, or (very long) hike. Be sure to enjoy the scenery on the way up, as it's quite spectacular as well. In fact, some thrifty travelers advise you skip the Nordkapphallen (and associated entry fee) and just enjoy the free scenery. I will admit, you could do worse.
