Our Hurtigruten coastal steamer arrived in port, which gave us a chance to explore this university town north of the Arctic Circle. We skipped the cruise-organized excursion and set out on foot. The weather didn't exactly cooperate, but we still managed to get some decent photos.

A very interesting site is the so-called "Cathedral of the Arctic", which claims to be the world's northernmost cathedral. A moderate-length walk from the boat dock across the bridge gets you here. Explore inside and around the grounds for nice views.

After visiting the Cathedral, we wandered around the far side of the harbor and explored. It's quite remarkable such a busy community is located so far north -- I was struck by the large number of cars. We would have loved to explore more of the town (including the University), but we had a boat to catch. I am told last-minute flights from Tromsø to Kirkenes are not cheap.
