In the value for money stakes Harrah’s is a winner due to its excellent location mid-Strip. Being a smaller property it’s not far from the lifts to the Strip and fairly easy to find your way around. It’s also handy for going further afield as there are a number of bus bays out the back where free shuttles and buses stop. There is also a tram station that takes you to MGM Grand at one end of the line and the Sahara at the other. The rooms aren’t large but they are perfectly acceptable with comfortable beds and a fully stocked bathroom. The casino has everything you would expect including a large Sportsbook. The Piano Bar has some fun late night entertainment and there is a good steakhouse.
Unique Qualities: Just outside is Carnaval Court which has shops and stalls selling souvenirs and clothing plus an evening bar and live music.

I stayed here in May 2005 and it was a perfect location for the bicentennial celebrations going on in the Fremont St. area. It is an Irish themed hotel with 638 rooms that have all the amenities you would expect from a 3+* hotel. Like all hotels in Vegas prices vary depending on a number of factors but expect to pay around $60 weekdays and $80 weekends. Sustenance is provided by a steakhouse, a 24hr café and the ubiquitous buffet. To be fair, there are better places to eat than Fitzgeralds, and you are of course spoilt for choice.
Unique Qualities: The casino is on two floors and the upper floor includes a video jukebox area that leads out onto the lucky Lookout Balcony that provides an excellent view of the action on Fremont St. and the lightshow. The room I was in didn't have a very inspiring view but then again I didn't spend much time staring out of hotel room windows.

I’ve not stayed at Hooters so cannot comment on the rooms but I have visited. It’s OK as long as you can put up with the rather tacky orange décor. The property isn’t one of the big prestige ones, the casino is quite small but has a nice outdoor seating area with a pool and the whole thing has a fun beach party feel to it. Probably more one for younger groups looking for a decently priced fun venue. The location is OK, the Tropicana is next door and they have some free daytime shows and there is an interesting gambling museum. The MGM is across the road and there’s a walkway from there across the Strip to NY-NY. At the MGM you can also pick up the monorail that will take you up the Strip casinos stopping at the Paris, the Flamingo, Harrahs, LV Hilton and finally the Sahara. Another plus about the location is that if you want to go Downtown (everyone should) you can get a bus (CAT) without going up the Strip which is very slow, either get the 105 up Koval Lane or go further along Tropicana to Swenson and catch the 108.

I stayed at the 4* Golden Nugget in 2003 and it is considered to be the best hotel in the Downtown area. It is ideally located right on Fremont St and perfect for the evening light show. The public areas and rooms are excellent and in my opinion compare favourably to a 4/5* hotel in Europe. Great customer service and a very enjoyable stay. A spa, salon, pool and all styles of eateries complete the Golden Nugget experience. It is more expensive than some of the others close by but I would recommend it to anyone considering staying Downtown.
Unique Qualities: The hotel lobby houses the Hand of Faith, allegedly the largest gold nugget on public display in the world.
