I Want to go Back

Chariot so Dire

After a period of inactivity on the travelling front I decided in 1997 that it was time to broaden my horizons once more so I renewed my passport and booked a cheap overnight coach to somewhere called Bled in a country known as Slovenia.

Given my current penchant for travelling in comfort I sometimes wonder how I survived that journey through purgatory. It ended up being more than 27 hours of sleeplessness, driving rain and autobahns interspersed with stops for food and comfort breaks. Now this was well before the Euro came into being, so it necessitated not only having the foresight to take a supply of French & Belgian Francs, German Marks and Austrian Schillings, but also correctly guessing which country I was in when being woken from an uneasy reverie at 2.30am by a stampede of people eager to get out for a breath of fresh air….or more likely a cigarette.

It was therefore with great relief that we arrived in Bled where my main objectives were to get as far away from my "chariot so dire" as I could, get stuck in to my first beer and try to forget that I would have to do the whole thing again in five days time.
I'd like to claim this photo as my own but it isn'

What a Wonderful Place

My thoughts were however soon moved from the discomfort of the journey by the beauty of my surroundings. The wonderfully calm lake, with its peaceful almost dreamlike island and church, overlooked protectively by the castle high above is truly an awe inspiring sight. It is one of those places that one comes across occasionally that make you just want to sit and let the experience wash over you. Block out the crowds, the noise, your thoughts, and become part of your surroundings.

It's a beautiful place to be and even if you only drop by for a few hours whilst staying nearby I'm sure you will be richer for the experience. After writing this I am tempted to put this on my wish list for another visit.

Must have been fascinating to see Bled in 1997 before it was "discovered".
