Scent to Paris

by St_Vincent - last update: Aug 19, 2007

Colin (not so) Smart.
.

I have been to Paris twice but neither visit was very recently. The first time was I the late 70's with a group of friends, I remember the Eiffel Tower, eating mussels and not eating snails, but not much else. The second time was in 1982 to watch the 5 Nations (as it was then) rugby international between France and England at the Parc de Princes. This was the game after which the infamous aftershave drinking episode took place.

At the after game dinner all the players were presented with a complimentary bottle of aftershave. The story goes that captain Maurice Colclough emptied his bottle, filled it with wine and drank it. On seeing his captain apparently drinking a bottle of aftershave, and not wanting to be outdone, prop forward Colin Smart did the same thing. He was taken to hospital soon afterwards and, on being asked how he was, his captain remarked “Not very well, but he smells lovely.”
The proper Tricolor
.

Another memory of Paris from the later visit was of being in Jaques Bar whilst the eponymous bartender carefully created a cocktail called a tricolor using three different spirits and proudly displayed it behind the bar - then the look on his face when we ordered six of them and downed them in one. You can always rely on us Brits to lower the cultural tone.

Interesting story and yes the Brits (barmy army)do add a lot of colour and "culture"to the Ashes series down under!
