Tarragona was once the Roman Empire's principal settlement in Spain, and the vast Roman influence is still found all over the city. Present day Tarragona is built on top of the remains of the old Roman Circus Maximus. You can tour the excavated vaults of the circus and get an idea of how massive the structure originally was, and how influencial Tarragona must have been during the 1st century.
