The Netherlands bacame a monarchy in 1815 with king Willem I. This included Belgium, but they became independent in 1830.
The Netherlands were neutral in WWI, but were invaded by the Germans in WWII. After the war, the Netherlands got the Marshallhelp from the US and became an industrialised country.
In 1953 the Netherlands were struck by a huge flooding, 'de Waternoodsramp' and since then a lot of effort has been put into preventing it from happening again.
The Netherlands are part of the European Union and changed their guilder into the euro in 2002.

The Netherlands have a population of over 16 million, so there are a lot of dense city areas.
The country consists for nearly 20% of water. A lot of the Netherlands is below or on sealevel, because the dutch made land were used to be sea, 'polders'. The highest point is Vaalserberg, 321 m above sealevel.
The Netherlands consists of 12 provinces: Zuid-Holland, Noord-Holland, Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Flevoland, Utrecht, Overijssel, Gelderland, Limburg, Noord-Brabant and Zeeland. The capital is Amsterdam and Rotterdam is one of the biggest ports in the world.

Well I live here, so I have to like it, don't I? I reckon the Netherlands are special because it's one of the most liberated countries in the world. Soft-drugs are more or less legal, which is good, because there's less underground drug trade. It's very multicultural because it's relatively easy to get a visum, although they're trying to change that. It's easy for tourists to, because everyone speaks english and usually french or german to.
