General

Cape Reinga is at the northern tip of New Zealand, the actual northernmost spot is Surville Cliffs, 30 km to the east. It isn't the westernmost point either, that's Cape Maria van Diemen, the next bay. Cape Reinga is sacred to the Maori though, they believe the spirits of the death go north from there and leave the earth. They call this place Te Rerenga Wairua. On Cape Reinga stands a lighthouse that's visible 38 km onto sea. Below the lighthouse is the Colombia Bank maelstrom, where the waters of the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean collide into each other and you can see that, with stormy weather, the waves can be up to 10 m high.
