As your plane makes its final approach to Frankfurt Airport and you look out of the window, you may wonder if you are back in the United States. Frankfurt looks like any US city with its central core of skyscrapers surrounded by a steadily expanding surburban sprawl. Like all major German cities, Frankfurt was bombed flat during the Second World War. When the war was over and the country divided, Frankfurt took advantage of its central location in the western sector to become West Germany's major transport hub and leading financial centre. ***** Old Cliffie used to visit Frankfurt regularly when he lived in Germany, jumping into his little red car and zooming up the autobahn to catch a soccer match or to meet visitors at the city's airport or station. He can't say it is one of his favourite places in Germany. It has none of the chocolate-box appeal of Rothenburg or even Heidelberg and none of the sense of history of Berlin or Munich. Old Cliffie can't see any US President coming to Frankfurt and proclaiming - like Kennedy in Berlin - 'Ich bin ein Frankfurter'. |

Helenbb Wed Aug 6, 2008 13:20 UTC hello hello? i guess my uncle is not at work today.. maybe too many asian...girls in frankfurt airport... and he does not wanna back to work la.. haha | MichaelFalk1969 Mon Jun 11, 2007 15:25 UTC I envy you for witnessing a 0:6 defeat of Bayern Munich by Kickers Offenbach. It will probably not happen in my lifetime though (sniff). - maybe in a parallel universe. | Nemorino Thu Apr 14, 2005 10:10 UTC Actually Kennedy did come to Frankfurt in 1963. I was in the Braubachstraße as he passed through standing in an open car (!) and waving to the crowd. Unbeknownst to me my future wife was in the same street, but we didn't meet until much later. | MissyWQ Wed May 29, 2002 22:36 UTC Do you work for Lufthansa? LOL |
