Ever had the feeling that you just wanted the earth to open up and swallow you, to hide your shame and embarrassment from shocked or mocking eyes?
Old Cliffie was making one of his early visits to Japan. He'd been there a couple of times before, and so he gave all the right answers and made all the right bows and breezed through the arrival formalities and successfully found his connecting flight from Osaka to Sapporo, where sweet little Fumiko was waiting with her coy smile at the airport. Kiss, kiss à la française from old Cliffie, blushing giggles from little Fumiko, and off they went to meet her parents for the first time.
They arrived, and old Cliffie went into his usual bowing-and-smiling routine while Father beamed at the thought of having a drinking companion for the evening, Mother bobbed up and down in embarrassment at having a gaijin in her home and Fumiko's younger sister hid behind Mother while peering wide-eyed at the strange foreign apparition.
The beer and sake appeared, toasts were made and old Cliffie felt that things were working out very well indeed. Father stood up, old Cliffie politely did the same, Father leant against the wall, old Cliffie did the same - and went straight through the paper 'shoji' screen into the next room.
He didn't see much of little Fumiko after that.

ive been reading past comments on my pagei just read your july 2007 message just now,,,thanks though too late,,,,ive been anywhere in jkapan except sapporo,,,,it has been my frustartion but maybe one day,,by the way,,you are a good looking man cliff!
Hahaha... Sure the Fumiko story was good... Some languages just seems to sound more passionate and contains more emotion... BTW, I'm a Singaporean... No kimchi gal here though I look like one... ;)

While I'm sure that your leaning against the wall would have been a kodak moment for sure, I'm sorry to hear that the visits came to a stop....

Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!! I used to help my mother replacing those Shoji papers on all the doors inside the house, when I was a kid. Punching holes into them was the best part.

Touching intro, Cliffie.. Hope the Fumiko clan has long since gotten over the unfortunate incident. During my only visit to Sapporo, I drank one too many freebies at that brewery, and irretrievably lost me camera. So no Sapporo VT page for me...
