Old Cliffie spent one of the happiest years of his life in Tokyo. But he'd already fallen for the city on his first visit, a quick weekend trip slotted in between Manila and Hong Kong. His Japanese girlfriend turned up at Narita to meet him, and then led him on a succession of buses and trains to her tiny apartment on the other side of the city. Friends and neighbours poured in, to gawk at this clumsy gaijin she had somehow acquired during her trip to Italy. Old Cliffie bobbed and bowed and smiled and generally must have passed the test of approval, since someone handed over his car keys and said: Why don't you take Fumiko to Nikko tomorrow?

And that is how old Cliffie set off from the west of this massive conurbation of 30 million people and drove right through the centre of Tokyo to find the freeway - and there was hardly any difference in the traffic jam - and to crawl northwards to Nikko while little Fumiko, sweet and guileless, happily sang along to a Michael Jackson cassette.
