"Niagara it ain't" Paterson by CliffClaven

Paterson Travel Guide: 11 reviews and 18 photos

Okay, this isn't Niagara, but with a drop of 25 metres the Great Falls on the Passaic river do claim to be the second biggest falls on the east coast. The potential of the falls for generating electricity was recognised by Alexander Hamilton, who founded Paterson as North America's first planned industrial city in 1792. The city boomed throughout the 19th century, producing a variety of manufactured goods ranging from guns to steam locomotives. Today, Paterson is New Jersey's third largest city. It is located just off Interstate 80, the main highway to the west from New York City.

You've learned more about Paterson than I ever knew and I even went on a school trip there as a child and lived a few towns over for a few years. It is truly a historical dump.

I kept hearing in my head - In Paterson that's just the way it goes - If you're black you'd better not show up on the street unless you want to draw some heat - but thinking there are many Paterson's in the States. But this is the Paterson.

Paterson had an intriguing history, but today it's extremely dangerous and crime-ridden. Its only distinction now is that leads the nation in the number of permanently disabled residents collecting SSDI/SSI checks.
