If Chicago resents losing its place as the nation's second city to Los Angeles, it hides it well. Perhaps it really believes that size doesn't matter, and indeed the centre is surprisingly compact. Most of what will interest visitors lies within the Loop - the rectangular rail line that encompasses the heart of the city - or just outside. Chicago, too, has a sense of identity that sprawling, amorphous Los Angeles can never achieve. It has three of the world's tallest buildings, soaring above the city skyline along Lake Michigan. It has world famous museums. It has a couple of baseball teams - the Cubs and the White Sox - that perennially underperform but inspire devotion among their fans. And, oh yes, Los Angeles has OJ - but Chicago has MJ: Michael Jordan, the incomparable Bulls player. |
