Like southern California, it never rains in Amsterdam but it pours. Old Cliffie was there one dark February night when the heavens opened and cold, biting rain came crashing down. Old Cliffie did what you would expect: sought shelter in the nearest pub.

It was only after ordering his Heineken, wiping his glasses and starting to look around that he realised he seemed to have walked into a Village People audition. Macho biker types were holding hands at the bar, while lip-sticked young men were fluttering their eyelashes at slim guys in tight undervests. Old Cliffie eased himself carefully back into an alcove and hoped that the rain, too, would soon ease.

It was then that the door behind the bar opened. The crowd cheered and whistled as one of the bar staff, dressed like Freddy Mercury in the never-to-be-forgotten-video of "I want to break free", sprang on the counter and mimed like a classic queen to the Queen classic.

Old Cliffie has to confess that even he started tapping his foot - but he then slipped out of the bar before his enthusiasm could be misinterpreted.....
