Karachi: Father of the Nation
  • Tip Rating:
  • Muhammad Ali Jinnar led the movement for a separate Muslim state and is regarded by Pakistanis as the Father of the Nation. His tomb stands on a hill overlooking Karachi, and a visit is a good excuse to escape the hectic streets below. The interior is embellished with gifts from China, Japan and Iran.

    Sharlimar Gardens, Lahore: Shalimar Gardens
  • Tip Rating:
  • Old Cliffie has visited most of the major Moghul sights in northern India, which explains why Lahore has to be on the 'must see' list in Pakistan. The Shalimar Gardens, close to the city, were built as a pleasure garden and summer palace by one of the great Moghul emperors, Shah Jahan, in the middle of the 17th century. The gardens and fountains provide a restful refuge from Lahore's scorching summer heat.

Things To Do: Bright British red
  • Tip Rating:
  • A sight to gladden the Mailman's heart! No guesses for who inspired these mailboxes, a relic of British colonial rule in Pakistan. No dull American blue, no simpering German yellow - just bright British red, standing out even in the blinding light of a hot Karachi afternoon.
