Like Bryan Adams - and presumably Neil Armstrong - old Cliffie had a good summer in 1969. He spent the first half of the summer looking after a bunch of French kids at a château near the Loire and then spent the second half living and loving in Paris with Tatiana, dark-haired and olive-eyed, who like old Cliffie was in France to study the language.
But time's wingèd chariot always moves on. And so did old Cliffie, to Naples. And Tatiana decided not to return to Bulgaria and ended up translating and interpreting for minor UN agencies in Vienna.
The Summer of '69 gave way to the Winter of '70 and old Cliffie took a slow train from Naples to Vienna to see if he and Tatiana could relive the fun in the sun of Paris in the bleak Vienna winter.
Nowadays, apart from the Giant Wheel in the Prater Park, there is nothing left to remind visitors of the postwar Vienna of Harry Lime and 'The Third Man'. But nearly 40 years ago, as icy winds disturbed the covering of snow across the deep pits and craters left by the construction of the Vienna underground system, the city still cast echoes and shadows of the austere postwar decade under Allied occupation.
And that was the last time old Cliffie saw Tatiana.

The way the Summer of 69 gave way to the Winter of 70 was momentous for me too... but all happened around home.Then I went to Europe and was impressed by people who'd gone from Naples to Vienna, like you. Great intro!
I love The Third Man. Almost sure the Switzerland speech was on the ferris wheel. Plus - sure you would have to add a nought to the price of a Lippizaner. (Sorry to be critical.)
