Things To Do: Nottingham Castle
  • Tip Rating:
  • Don't expect Nottingham Castle to be some medieval fortress. The city's original castle was destroyed by the Roundheads during the Civil War in England. The next structure on the site burned down in the early 19th century. The present castle dates from the second half of the 19th century and houses Nottingham's municipal museum and art gallery. An hour is probably enough to spend inside, but then you can enjoy the peaceful gardens around the building.

Things To Do: Tales of Robin Hood
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Nottingham's most popular visitor attraction - The Tales of Robin Hood - is only two minutes on foot from Nottingham Castle, which makes it an ideal full or half-day experience. A real medieval adventure in sight, sound and smell. Escape from the evil Sheriff of Nottingham and flee to Sherwood Forest in our unique adventure cars.' Well, that's what the blurb says, and the little Clavens really enjoyed it. And old Cliffie didn't mind, since they sell beer at the little café inside. Nice souvenir shop, too. And at night they turn the place into a medieval banquet hall, with a Robin Hood show.

Things To Do: Robin Hood statue
  • Tip Rating:
  • Isn't this why you came to Nottingham? The statue of Robin Hood stands below the castle, and there are usually a few tourists taking pictures. Join the queue, and when you have finished you'll be happy to know that England's oldest pub is only a short walk away.

Things To Do: Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem
  • Tip Rating:
  • Old Cliffie is always amused when he sees those signs in the States proclaiming the venerable age of some shop or restaurant: Established 1957, Since 1976, etc. They ought to come to Nottingham and take a look at Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem. England's oldest pub has been dispensing ale and beer in the same place since 1189. The food is pretty average pub grub, but they serve an excellent Jerusalem bitter - and nothing beats supping a good pint on a warm summer day and knowing that people have been doing the same thing in the same location for more than 800 years.

Things To Do: Where Robin wed Marian
  • Tip Rating:
  • This doesn't look too impressive: not really the kind of church that would merit a 'vaut le détour' in the Michelin guide. But St Mary's Church in the village of Edwinstowe, near Nottingham, is reputed to be where Robin and Maid Marian were wed. I guess they didn't invite the Sheriff.

You're right after discovering that there is no medieval castle to admire the Olde Trip is a conveniently close piece of history to enjoy :).
