If sitting atop a mist-shrouded mountain watching German tour buses attempting to reverse into impossible parking spaces is your idea of fun - then San Marino is for you. It's all go during the day, as the buses do their paso doble in the tiny car park and hordes of pink and red Northern Europeans stream up the hillside from their two weeks on the beaches of Rimini for their obligatory daytrip to the Most Serene Republic. In the evening, however, it's bit like being on the set of 'The Prisoner', as the crowds fade away, leaving you alone as you nurse your Nastro Azzurro at the counter of some deserted bar. Next time, you tell yourself, you'll sneak aboard one of the buses and follow that Swedish blonde who was giving you the eye.
