The computer was powered down, the handbag on the desk, the jacket resting on the chair. The travel agent was obviously ready for a quick Friday night getaway as old Cliffie walked in at ten to six and said: I want a ticket to Bucharest tomorrow, first flight on KLM, coming back the next day.

The sigh was audible, but she switched on her computer and let her fingers dance around until there was that exciting sound of a ticket being printed. So what was all the fuss? Old Cliffie was out of her office and out of her hair by one minute to six.

Spur of the moment? Well, kind of. Old Cliffie had been sitting in his office, trawling around the Internet at the end of a hard week, when he found the KLM special offer to Bucharest. A great opportunity, especially with Mrs Claven and the little Clavens sunning themselves elsewhere in the world. Old Cliffie, of course, had stayed behind to earn his meagre salary to pay for all their extravagance.

Home to pack a bag and eat a frugal repast - a carefully chosen steak, an unassuming Bordeaux and, hey, why not finish that tub of Häagen-Dazs since the little Clavens aren't here to do the job! - and off to bed with Lonely Planet's guide to Romania.....

I must defend the quality of the Romanian bottled beer, dear Cliffie, by telling you that Timsoreana clasic is a very bad choice. Nowadays it isn't produced anymore: nobody liked it.
