Decades of driving on five continents have taught old Cliffie the wisdom of keeping a low profile and obeying the local traffic laws. And even then, grinning traffic cops in Mexico, Morocco and Macedonia have relieved old Cliffie of dollars, dirhams and deutschmarks for violations that only they could see.

So, it was with the usual sigh of resignation that old Cliffie stopped on the outskirts of Prague when a policeman leapt with his lollipop stick in front of the car. But this time, in fact, he just wanted to know where the unusual licence plate came from. Old Cliffie's patient explanation about special Swedish export plates was confusing enough - but then he produced a British passport issued in Italy, a German driving licence and a Luxembourg insurance certificate. And when his companion produced a sweet smile and a Japanese diplomatic passport indicating accreditation to Finland, the policeman pushed back his cap, scratched his head, muttered the Czech equivalent of 'Bloody hell!' and waved old Cliffie and the lovely Tomiko on their way.

Nice job, Cliff, but I am surprised that cop didn't throw you off the Charles Bridge. We had lunch at the Hotel Paris but couldn't afford to stay there like the upper crust.
