CityCat: This is an enjoyable must
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a fun thing to do in Brisbane, not only that, but its relativly cheap, and its public transport.

Hop on to a City Cat at on of the many river stops and do the round trip.

This can be done both day and night (as with the lights at night its kinda spectatucalar, and by day very scenic.

a big PLUS - With the current Brisbane City Link Fare structures, a full day pass will only cost you $5.20 for the day, even cheaper if you use off peak times. Not only that but it can be used on all public transport, (City Cat, Ferry, Train, Bus,) as long as it is within zones 1 & 2 till midnight. There are some time restrictions with an off peak ticket.

Queen Street Mall: Australia's biggest shopping mall
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Queen Street mall is Australia's biggest and most successful shopping mall. It covers Queen St for 2 blocks and is constantly being upgraded in one way or other.

There is shopping galore, Cafes, Food Halls, Bars, Movie Complex's you name it it is here, and at one end is Brisbane's Casino

The mall is easily accessable from Train (Central or Roma St Stations) Bus, City Cat and Ferry's.

There are 2 stages that are often used for free performances by various groups. Street theatre is also common here along with buskers.

Another added advantage for visitors is the tourist information office which is in the centre of the mall.

    Southbank: One of a kind
  • Tip Rating:
  • Southbank in Brisbane is one of a kind.

This is actually the site of the Brisbane World Expo back in the 1990's

There are many walks, formal gardens, rain forests, cafe's, restaurants, pubs etc, and on public holidays and at weekends, a huge market.

The most prominent feature though has to be the Beach, complete with Surf Lifesavers in the middle of the city. This is a hugely popular place for families and kids (both young and old).

When I lived close by, I would walk to work through here and there would be office workers swimming before work there.

On public holidays like Christmas day, you have to be there really early like 6am to be able to get one of the free public BBQ's provided by the Brisbane City Council for the day. Many Many families do this.

    There are Showers provided free.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary: Mirimar Cruise
  • Tip Rating:
  • xperience the cruise aboard Brisbane's most famous river Boat, MV Mirimar, takes you 19 kilometres (12 miles) upstream through some of the city's most attractive suburbs and most interesting wildlife habitats.

You'll see modern mansions alongside graceful Old Queenslander homes with their wide verandahs and wrought iron lacework - all overlooking lush river-front gardens.

Come close to flying foxes (fruit bats) in the wild. You'll have the opportunity to get a close up view of a unique inner-city colony of fruit bats -so close you can hear the beating of their wings.

And you'll learn about Brisbane's past -some of it amusing and some of it horrifying as the Captain recalls our history. His local knowledge will amaze you!

You will arrive at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary (entry fee included in price). Here you have a full two hours to cuddle a Koala, hand feed Kangaroos and marvel at Australia's many more animal wonders.

    Cost $48 adults $27 children

  • Brisbane - Queensland Performing Arts Centre
  • Queensland Performing Arts Centre
  • by stevemt , 4 more photos
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • This is a really pleasant way to see this part of Brisbane, It can be combined with a meal as the Brisbane City Council provide free electric BBQ facilities along the way.

There are demarcated walking path's and seperate path's for cyclist's and bladers, so its safe for all.

You can try rock climbing at the cliffs as well if you are game. There is also cayaking available.

The walk starts from the Story Bridge and can end right round at west end, it depends how far you want to go.

It includes Southbank, goes past the Maritime museum, passes the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, The Queensland Museum and the Queensland Library. There are many cafe's restaurants, a beach (yes there is one in the middle of Brisbane), and in the summer you can see the water dragons sunning themselves.

    Things To Do: Tangalooma Resort
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • This can be a day trip or a stay over one - your choice.

There is a resort on the island that is quite good, the day trippers get to use the facilities there for the day.

You go over on the Cat from Brisbane (the trip takes aprox 1 - 1 1/2 hours) . Its a nice ride and the day over there is great.

It has a lot to do, walks, snorkling, beach walks, beach quad bike rides etc, or just laze on the beach or by the pool on at the bar, your choice.

There are wrecks just off shore a short distance away to snorkle, and there are also guided snorkle tours if you want.

Tangalooma also has dolphin feading (for the normal fee) Every night on sunset, a pod of up to 11 bottlenose dolphins swim up to the beach in front of the resort

    Things To Do: Newstead House
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Newstead House is Brisbane's oldest domestic dwelling. It was built in 1846 on the Breakfast Creek bank of the Brisbane River.

The building was occupied by American troops during World War II. There is an Australian-American War Memorial in the grounds in memory of this. Newstead House is now a museum and heritage listed. It is open to the public, and concerts are sometimes held at the house and grounds.

The house is open to the public and worth a visit.

Nice Brisbane tips! I haven't been there for several years, but I do send cruise ships there, working ahead on their operations. Cheers!
