This musem, is certainly worth a visit. It is sobering to view the photo's, the exhibits, and read the narratives. However, I personally found it a little hard to take the very onesided view that is portrayed here, especially considering that apparently 95% of the material came from the US archives. The musem itself is housed in the old US Intelligence building. One exhibit caught my eye, A guillitine used last in 1920 I believe.

This is a worthwile trip to take. Its about 6 hours all up and very scenic. You start with a long car journey to the delta and en route you see local life Vietnamese style. At the delta you transfer to a boat and go past a fish farm, and then call into a tourist island to see coconut toffee being made (and sold), souvineer stalls, morning tea where you sample rice wine, local fruits etc, and get a sample hearing of local music played on traditional instruments and song. - very interesting for me as a part time musician. Back to the boat and off to another island for lunch where they make springs rolls in front of you. Lunch was great. Then back to the boat via a trip in the back waters on a sam pan (if they locally call it that?) that is scenic and interesting as you see historic type traditional dutch dwellings and current dwellings of the locals.

The Notra Dame Cathedral is worth a visit. This is definatly part of Vietnam's French heritage. Its a brick building, and inside I got kind of a suprise. Never before have I seen neons incorporated with the idols. Yes its gloomy, but that's ok. You will see the occaisional (or 6) beggar as well so be aware. Apart from that, its a worthwhile place to visit. Its peaceful.

dancinbudgie Sat May 30, 2009 09:51 UTC Yes...I remember reading your War Remnants Museum tip. I went there too but even after your tip i wasn't prepared for how graphic the displays were. I had to force myself to look at them. Awful...but necessary to see I think. T. | Nemorino Thu May 17, 2007 22:45 UTC Yes, my son got hassled for taking a photo of a bridge when we were in Vietnam in 1995. But otherwise we were given a very friendly welcome everywhere, even though I had been an enemy soldier in the 1960s. | aussirose Fri Sep 22, 2006 13:40 UTC I loved HCM! Perhaps it was the culture shock...something different....crazy bike drivers, dunno! But I think the people are lovely. The airport sounds like something else...we cruised in ;o) Enjoyed your write up matey :o) | Tattugran Wed Aug 2, 2006 09:17 UTC loved looking at your Ho Chi Minh page STeve. well done.:) |
