Jim Thompson was an American silk trader who established in Bangkok and it seems that he really aprehended Thai culture and architecture. He was the founder of the Thai Silk Company and his house is now a kind of shop-museum. The garden is particularly charming with beautiful flowers and ponds. Guided tour is compulsory: you cannot visit the house without following the tour. We didnt care much for the tour, except from being the only way of visiting the house (well, the houses, in fact. There are several connected teak buildings): our guide gave us a monotonous speech, which she has learnt by heart, which we found hardly understable. But the whole place deserves a visit. You can reach the house by Skytrain, National Stadium stop. Entrance fee is 100 baths for adults and it opens from 9. to 17, although the last tour is at 16.30. Beautiful stuff on the shop, but there are at least one outlet in Bangkok of the same brand (at Sukhumvit Road) with cheaper prices.

If we consider Bangkok as a show, in my opinion, the main star would be Chao Phraya river. You can spend hours just looking this lively, fresh, ever-changing stage. Cargo ships and bus-boats mix with luxury cruisers. At banksides you can admire some of the most luxurious hotels in Thailand, the most beautiful wats and all kind of scenes of everyday life, for example, people hanging their laundry. There are also smaller wats along the river (apart form Wat Arun, Wat Phra Kaew or Wat Po), which are accesible from piers stranded along the bankside. Travelling along the river is both cheap (18 baths each way) and fast (you avoid Bangkok traffic jams, which are sometimes terrible). There are also little boats which only cross the riverSi considerasemos que Bangkok es un espectaculo, en mi opinion, el rio Chao Phraya deberia ser la estrella.

Wat Traimit is one of the most important wats in Bangkok, mainly because of the statue of Lord Buddha that it houses, the well-known Golden Buddha. Not only is gold its outer layer, no. The whole Buddha is made of solid gold!!! The temple is close to Hualamphong Railway Station and you can take it as a startpoint of a walk around Chinatown. The building itself is cramped between other buildings, so it is difficult to take a good photo of the whole wat.

It is difficult to describe properly how Bangkok is: oh, yes, it is a very modern city, with beautiful skyscrapers; and it is also a monumental place, so marvellous wats; and it is also a shopping paradise, where you get the impression that you can buy anything at any hour. But when you are close to a khlong (a small canal in the middle of the city), you could easily think that you are more in a village. Houses at the banksides of the khongs seem sometimes to be hanged over it. They are usually very modest houses, which make a shocking contrast with the malls or the buildings that you can see just beside them. You can do a boat tour of the khongs. We did not, but you can look to life there from many places in Bangkok. These pics are taken at the khlong near Jim Thompsons. It was our first morning in Bangkok and we were quite impressed.

Visiting the complex of Wat Phra Keow is like a kind of drunkness: so many beauties around you that it is difficult to choose where you must look at. We liked a lot this golden and colourful statues, over the place which houses the emmerald Budha. Entrance fee is 250 bahts for the whole complex. Be aware of not wearing shorts or sleeveless t-shirts, or you will not be allowed to enter. In case there is any problem with your clothes, you can also borrow some clothes at the main entrance. It will cost you 100 bahts, but you will be refunded of your money if you return the clothes backVisitar el complejo de Wat Phra Keow is como una especie de borrachera: tantas bellezas a tu alrededor que es dificil elegir hacia donde debes mirar.

The building at the left of the pic is the temple that houses Emmerald Budha. Unfortunately, we could not see it, because there was planned a ceremony for that afternoon, so the entrance was not allowed. In spite of that, we were not highly disappointed: everything was so incredible that we did not miss this statue. So, one more reason to come back to Bangkok..

In front of Emmerald Buddha Wat, there is a place where people puts their offerings to Lord Buddha: candles, flowers, images... You also can see some persons praying while giving their offering. You must cross the river to visit Wat Arun. There are little boats that will take you to the other side. The trip cost 3 bahts. Entrance fee to Wat Arun is 20 bahts. You will be surprised when checking that the so peculiar covering of the wat is a kind of china little plates or little pieces placed over the wall. Perhaps you will see it at the second pic of the tip, it is not as clear as I would wish, but you can get an idea. I also recommend that someone takes you a picture from downstairs, it will show how huge is Wat Arun, because you will look soooo small.

This is Grand Palace, the secular part of the complex. It was built around our XVIIIth century (bear in mind that Thai people dont use our calendar and they are not more than 5 centuries in advance) and its beautiful proportions dont need many further comments. We were amused by the trees, the gardeners seem to carve them and the result is worth a visit by itself.

We went to floating market from Bangkok with a little company. The six of us were the only passengers and we didnt take the boats at the main pier of floating market, but at least a couple of kilometers far from it. It was one of the best things that could happen to us: we enjoyed the trip so much, there were so many interesting things on the way... First of all, it was like a complex net of small cannals, with so many crossings that we even commented if the boat driver would know well the way, because it seemed easy to get lost. Then, the houses at the banks. They were not floating houses, but life there was thought to be the water its main concern. It was funny to check that there was electrical power, we had a feeling of being in such a remote place that perhaps this was the only reminder we had of modernity.
